Carlsbad Caverns- way cool

Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. I decided to continue to use back roads on the way, and I saw ALOT of oil fields on the way through TX, there are the old oil derricks and new technologies too. I would be okay never seeing another, and the oil roads that we drove on , some of the new ones were great, some of the older ones not so much. As we made it into New Mexico on the way to Carlsbad Caverns, we had to turn on White City Road (White is the guy who found the caverns) MAPS kept telling me in 21 miles right turn on to the same road, then 17 miles, same thing, then finally there is a sign (we are in the middle of no where)… PAVEMENT ENDS…. WHATTT????!!!! Holy Moly, What do I do?? Plug on , we go around a bend then down a hill, there it is, no pavement, (please God let this be quick) in about 1/10 of a mile we go up hill and there is pavement again. WHEW, it looks like maybe when there is rain or melt the road washes out there… I think I would have given up if it was not passable. We made it to Carlsbad Caverns and they even have a dog kennel ($15) so your pup does not have to stay in the car/camper. The walk goes down the equivalent of the Empire State building, there are cave sparrows and Bats(at night). The walk is steep and dark, after about 5 min I remembered I am afraid of heights, so a couple of anxiety attacks later I was on the move.
